Patient immobility exerts a negative effect on every physiological body system, as well as on emotional well-being. When patients are able to get out of bed or ambulate, both physical and psychological well-being improve. In cases where the patient is confined to bed, regular turning and repositioning is essential to preserve skin integrity. Assisting the patient with these tasks is an important nursing responsibility. Work-related musculoskeletal injuries rank as the leading occupational health problem affecting the nursing workforce, placing the nurse at significant risk for injury. Data from the United States Department of Labor show that nursing is among the occupations at greatest risk for musculoskeletal disorders. The risk for injury that can be both life-altering and career-ending crosses all nursing specialties. Injuries to nurses also impacts the organizational level, resulting in increased absenteeism, lost work time, poor retention and high turnover, increased health care costs, and compromised recruitment. Injuries also further complicate the nursing shortage, resulting in declining rates of recruitment into the profession, decreasing retention, and lowering social perceptions as to the value of nursing.
